I have been in and out of the hobby since 1980 or so. On 10 years, off 10 years.
this last “off session” has been about 5 years or so. Some of you guys know how this goes. Maybe even most of you.
i have several crippled birds that I could repair pretty easily. I’ll let them continue to hang in the floor joist for a little while longer.
I have plans, plans, plans. I went over them all and blew the
dust off of the New Era III. This is what I will start with.
I have the latest build article. It came in an old RCM magazine. It was written Sometime in the late 90s by “Joe Beshere” SP?
I saw a couple of threads. One was a fellow who did a great job converting it to electric. I’ll dig up his name and post it here. Really nice work. The original design used a 25. I haven’t made up my mind just yet on the way I will go. I’ll build the wings first and leave the fuse a little long. That way I can cut the front up when I have decided. dig
i also found a thread that was started 6 months or so ago. He seemed to be making some good progress but the thread stopped.
well anyway, if anyone has built this small pattern ship please chime in.

Straight enough

Built according to plan. 1/4” spruce spars. I beam shear webbing. All balsa besides the leading edge of course is 3/32. Woah. She’ll be heavy.

I built the New Era III from the Airtronics kit.. I had bought it back when I first started flying in the 70's but waited until the 90's to build her..

It is a fast little plane.. I had a pretty hot 25 on it.. If you can lighten it up some you will be happy with the result.

She flew nice and true, like a pattern plane..

It’s been a while since I have built a toy.
I got started on this before I saw that others had substituted 1/4” balsa for the spars.
Oh well, if I crash it first time out I can still use the wing as a hammer.

24 years later I knew I would be wantin’ it. I have a full size lazy be with ailerons. I built a 1/2 size with ailerons also. Yep, the “New Era III Revisited article is handy.

Color scheme? Too early to think about.

Going to temporarily install control horns on the ailerons in order to set up my bell cranks.
Other ways to control the ailerons for sure but I like bell cranks.

Nothing wrong with bell cranks they were used a lot years before servos got cheap and small enough a builder could afford to use a pair of them.
