Default Rear Exiting Smoke tube question

Hi all,

I am wanting to install rear exiting smoke tube in a 140 sized jet. What do you recommend to use for tubing (size, material, etc) and how should I shape the exhaust end? Any suggestions

I have used copper tubes (3/52” or so) for years now, so I know stainless isn’t needed. And my copper tubes are right behind my turbines.

If I were installing like you want, I would make a 100-120 bend on the end of the copper tube, insert a an exacto blade in the end and then crush the end of the tube with the blade still there to leave a small, flat aperture.

That’s what I would do!

EDIT: Oops, I meant brass too!

I use 3/16 stainless tube. Its cheap and I take a number 11 exacto blade and put point into the tube close in a vise and then pull blade out. Works perfectly

I was told by a friend to install a check valve where the smoke line joins the tube to prevent siphoning.

‘If you got a PowerBox or KingTech pump.....you really don’t need this...but it cannot hurt for sure...

I have used "one way valves" and "check valves". I'm not convinced they do anything in a smoke system other than add more resistance to the system.

I posted that to get opinions, thanks.

My Boomerang XL set up doesn't drip, my set up in my new Turbinator does like a #%%*÷*@, what gives, same TamJets pump, on/off valve, nozzle, it may be how they seat on the ground, don't know here.

Carlos, are you saying that you see smoke fluid drip out of your smoke tube? With the turbine on or off?

A check valve wouldn't necessarily fix that since the fluid would still be moving in the same one way, ie out the tube.

The check valve is supposed to keep the smoke system "primed" so that you get smoke right away by not letting the smoke fluid flow backwards back into the smoke tank. But like I've seen, I haven't really seen a difference.

The check valve provides just enough resistance to stop the drip.

When driving home this afternoon it hit me, the Boomerang has the shut off valve in front of the turbine and lower than the turbine, the Turbinator's shut off valve is in front of the gas tank, the fluid line from the shut off valve to the engine is higher than the engine, so it has about 12" of fluid that can drip right after the shut off valve when it is open.

I will look how to move the fluid line to a lower position to stop the siphoning.

I have always made the exit at the rear of the jet. I used 3/16th copper tube. I would also run the tube between the double walls of the pipe. A slite bend to get the tip of the tube into the exhaust. A number 11 exact o blade then squeeze the end. A check valve where the brass and the fuel tubing meet to stop the smoke oil from draining back to the tank. I also would run a header tank, 2 to 4 oz's so you are drawing from a tank that is full. this helps with the negative g's so you don't get the on and off smoke through maneuvers.
Also the tube in the rear gives that scale look with a gap between the jet and the smoke.

All sounds good. I’ll have tubing tomorrow. Any pictures of nozzle end of tube would be helpful. Do you just cut end square and flatten with #11 blade or do you leave some sort of “hat” or lip? Thx

Joe! Great flight! Time to get some real smoke fluid though!

That looked like diesel?

https://baddogsmokes.com/turbine-smoke-tubes

The key is how good it atomizes the smoke oil. Made probably two dozen myself and bought many.
The best result I've had is these. Almost doubled my smoke time. Have a high volume one on my Boomerang
SPRINT with JetCat P80SE. Made of all stainless steel with I think .020" or .040" hole and 45 degree milled angle.
Talked with the guy couple years ago when he first stated making Jet tubes.

Definitely put a shut off valve just before the smoke tube. I open mine when filling tank, watch it reach the tube then shut it off and continue filling tank.
Then turn valve on just before take off. That way its all primed and it won't siphon the primer tank. I use a UAT for smoke also so I don't get any
breaks in smoke at any attitude. Have a TamJets pump on SPRINT and PowerBox on KingCat, both work great with UAT.

Good Luck

I have a few installed for this season looking forward to see the difference....from these Bad Dog Smoke....to the generic I’m using on others jets..

I was looking at these, but really want something that exits behind plane. I imagine I could buy his nozzle ends and silver solder them into longer stainless tubing....but not sure they are designed to work that way

The smoke fluid in the video was concrete form release oil. I also mixed in some citronella oil with it. it smoked ok but i think the commercial grades would have done better.

This picture is from my F-15 in the video. Thanks Cars Scale position for the tube on one side. I watched a lot of full scale jets including the Blue Angeles and they all have the smoke tube on one side on a twin.

My T-1 the tube is a Pacific Jet 36”, it travel between the inner/outer pipe.....exit at the back, with a KingTech pump and Smoke On smoke fluid.
