RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

I agree 100% on the 50 cc size. I have a 50cc glow (convertable to gas) Atlas MX-50, which I've had for about 15 years now, and guard jealously, as they are no longer available. I flew a 90", 26...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

In about 32 years of building P-51 and other retract systems, (I've never used plastic) I have to agree with Brian. The structure can cause more problems than the gear. In many cases, the...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Mike. a toein of 1 deg is sufficient. Thats per leg, so if the total between the wheels is 2-3 degs, it should be perfect. Excess toein can be just as bad as toeOUT, which is an absolute...

Very true, Mike. It would be whatever you could sneak in! I'm going to our club meeting tonight, and will see if I can find a plan! I always learn from all these things! Lee

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Mike. It's clearer now, as I read both your and snaers comments. Because of the difference in yours and his builds, the discrepancy is probably due to "tolerance accumulation" during building. ...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Michel. I looked at that pic and enlarged it. It is definitely hitting the back end of openings, if I understand the problems. I have probably missed some things, as I haven't read the whole...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Mike, Tom et al. Have a few cents to toss in here. Having built custom retracts for 32 years, I have run into some problems along the way. The primary problem here is with Top Flite, not doing...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Upton. Enon Valley?? I'm from Freedom, and when I was in high school, 1944, I had a pen pal, John Hillman, whom I later met in person after I got out of USAF in '48. I actually flew my '47...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Countryboy. Thanks so much. I just looked at the pics and see why! That original system was easy for the designer (didn't have to think too much!). Your change is definitely better, but...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Mike et al. Why do you think I always want to spread the load across at least 4 ribs? I haven't seen these plans, but from what people have been saying, it sounds like a piece of horshoe-shaped...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

May I butt in? I have used hard maple motor mount bearers for about 50 years, as I like to spread the load across at least 4 ribs. You can also drill and tap the wood with the threads for the...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

That is the front end of the dorsal, so go to the rear end, where it joins the vertical fin. Thats the corner they are referring to. Lee

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Goose. Looking at that pic of the real one, the dorsal is the long sloping section from forward on the fuse to the fin itself. Where they join is the small, squarish radius they are talking...
