RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Only one change was necessary. For some reason the wing attachement was changed 180 degrees from the kit. Dowels and wing bolts had to swop places in the fuse. It took me one evening to fix....

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Jeff,

I'm sorry to welcome you to the club. [:o]

I had almost the same experience on my maiden flight last year. The engine died shortly after take off. I reacted to late, stalled on the...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

I think I can live with that aviator :)

And as shown by your pictures, if you do the cutting nice and precise, it doesn't hurt to much.

Good looking plane BTW!

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Yes, the Moki 45 is a gas engine. The reason for choosing it was to avoid cutting the cowl to much. It has a front carb and rear exhaust, so nothing sticks out of the sides of the cowl. But, I rather...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

I've got several feedbacks in the negative direction about the Moki. So, I think the Moki is history.

Got the RTC today, and teste the form fit of the wing. On the positiv side, it fits quite...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Thanks for the hint. The engine is going in for a full inspection, but I sense that my trust towards this Moki 45 is diminishing by the hour. I maybe end up using the DA50 instead, of which I really...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

I'm afraid I didn't get much flight experience out of the Mustang berrick, as this happened 30 secs into her maiden flight at a recent scale gathering in my local club. (So plenty of witnesses to the...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

I lost most of the power just after take off, tried to make a climb out at about stall speed. And of course every one knows what happens when you try to turn back to the runway with allmost no power....

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

From my own experience, solartex is very easy to work with. If you have some experience with applying solartex type of coating, you should expect a very good result. If you don't have any...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

I would guess the crome ultracote would be the easiest, and maybe the most realistic. The original seems rather polished, so I would have had second thoughts about using the steel wool. The Olive...

Tim,

During my investigation phase before using the Warbird Collor's, I came a cross experiences with different types of thinner. Some recommended ether, others told that ether made the Warbird...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Thanks all.

I've certainly learned a lot during my P-51 project, and also got tons of useful help by this thread. Can't wait to get her airborne now :)

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

The paint job is almost done. Remaining stuff is installing the batteries, ignition system, air filler cap, glue the rudder hinges, install choke servo, and some other small adjustments. Expecting...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

I've just checked the Pilot Training Manual for the P-51. There is a chapter describing the elevator modification.

"Latest P-51D's and K's come from the factory with metal covered elevators and...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Tom,

I for sure know the feeling..., no time for building... (and for me also lack of motivation). And yes, the wheels and doors are a true puzzle, allthough sweet when it all comes together...

Hi Mike,

Yes!, it's a nice feeling when everything goes according to the plan ;)

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Ed,

I don't think I've yet found the perfect mix of method/primer/paint for doing demanding and detailed paint jobs on FM coated surfaces. By demaning I mean small, detailed and multi-colored...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Nice pics, did you use Flite Metal? No problems with peeling off?

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi again all,

As you can see from my pics, I haven't done a lot of airbrushing yet. Only anti glare on the hood, and some invasion stripes on the wing. The "Old Crow" is done by applying pre-cut...

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build

Hi Mike,

I've used Flite Metal all over, except for the rudder. On the rudder I used some kind of iron on fabric that I had laying around.

I gave up on the inner panels for the outer door....
